Singaporeans love running. It is the most accessible sport around, as anyone and everyone are able to do it. However as much as this sport of passion benefitted our health, injuries are also part and parcel of it, especially when stresses are transmitted to our ankles & knees with every step our foot impacted the ground.
Here are some examples of peak loads that occur on the surfaces of a knee joint during various sport’s activities according to Kuster2000 :
1) Bicycling produces loads of 1.2 BW (Body Weight)
2) Power walking produce loads of 4 times BW
3) Jogging produces loads of 9 times BW
4) Squatting produces 3.5 times BW
If you weighs 92kgs, when you runs, you will be subjecting your knees to a stress of 828kgs or 414kg per knee!
Similarly, each time you walk, you will exert 276 kg force on both your knees or 138 kg on each knees !
About 30-40% of Singaporeans are recreational runners, who train consistently and participates in long distance races - they are the most likely to sustain such injuries on the knees and feet.
