9 August 2006 was Singapore’s 41st birthday. It was also a significant day as “Kayano” laced up his running shoes since more than 20 years ago. As he panted and grasped for air, he got himself hooked to his new hobby – a running addiction. Since then, he signed up for the Nike Runaholic and SGRunners forum. These were steps in making sure his attempt in his 1st marathon would not end in disaster. In fact, through his diligent training (he ran minimum 3 times a week), he lost 6kg in the process, built up a stronger immune system, and had become focus on having a healthy diet.
“Kayano” was made and raised in Singapore. He works as Strategic Outsourcing Manager, providing IT support for outsourcing of IT solutions. When he’s not running or training for races, he encourages his colleagues and staff in his company to participate in sports and recreation activities as the company Sports OIC / Manager. At Church level, he inspires his church mates to form a running group, exchanging pointers with regards to running and Church ministries.
“Kayano” believes the close relationship that can be found between working and running. To him, he must be able to pace himself at work and during his run. “There must be a balance somewhere”, he says. “From building bases and rapport (endurance and mileage), as part of the building for a good customer-relationship (and running foundation). If you “chiong” all the time, you may end up collapsing before you reach the end of the project (race).”
His 2nd principal to working and running is that “you must finish your job (race) well”. “Along the way, you will face obstacles (fatigue) and complaints (injuries). It is how you overcome your adversity (blisters, wall) to achieve your final goal.”
Lastly, he also believes in listening to his own body, just like he listens to his customers and his fellow team members and staff. “If not, injuries may surface or there maybe unsatisfactory customer feedback as I do not understand my customer’s concern.”
“Kayano” is now preparing for his 1st overseas marathon (the Kuala Lumpur International Marathon on 18 Mar 2007). As he pushed himself to achieve his 1st overseas goal of running a marathon, let’s read more about this healthy-conscious and disciplined SGRunner.
